About Cementers Ltd
Cementers Limited was incorporated and registered as a limited company in 1969 by Messers Kurji V. Patel and Laxman M. Arjan. Prior to the establishment of Cementers Limited, the two had incorporated Kurji Vishram Patel Building Contractors Firm which was to be the predecessor of Cementers Limited. The two had been in the employment of several firms of international repute, such as Mowlem, Facta, Estaldi and Solel Boneh, all which were based in Nairobi.
Following the inception and registration of the firm in Kenya, the company was subcontracted by Facta Company that had been awarded the labor contract for the construction of the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi. This was the beginning of things to come. It was while sub-contracting for Facta that the Nairobi City Council granted to Cementers the tender for the construction of its main academic institutions. Nonetheless, the company has so far been able to curve a niche for itself in the construction industry within the country with a wide scope of projects ranging from housing complexes, luxury apartments, academic and financial institutions, eateries, among several other establishments. The major corporate clients who have remained as part of the Cementers Limited family include, Barclays Bank of Kenya Limited, Standard Chartered Bank Limited, United States International University- Africa (USIU-A), Lonrho Group, Mobil Oil Kenya Limited, Innscor Kenya Limited, Kenya Post and Telecommunication (Telecom Kenya), among others. The complete succession of the projects has not been without the commitment and dedication of all the staff employed at Cementers. The investment and aquisition of the latest plant and machinery has ensured that the company is able to meet the clients' demand in the provision of quality buildings. This has made Cementers establish itself as one of the reputable firms in the construction industry. At the same time Cementers Limited has embarked on a safety program guaranteed to ensure that all its operations are carried out with respect to all the requirements stipulated by law. These include complying with all applicable environment and health and safety laws and regulations. The company has seen it viable to invest in health and safety issues by educating its employees. A new program being set up will ensure that at least three different employees are sent for training with the St John Ambulance three times a Year.
With the need to diversify, Cementers has created a niche for itself not only in Kenya but also in other countries thanks to good investor opportunities available. With the governments efforts to encourage foreign investment in Uganda, in 1992, Cementers Limited established a subsidiary company whose objectives were to meet the demands for the region. So far the subsidiary company has created a niche for itself as a provider of quality, efficient and long lasting buildings. It has gone ahead to establish itself as the major supplier of quality pre-cast materials in the region. With a desire to expand, Cementers Limited is thinking of entering other markets with Rwanda as a stepping-stone towards the central African market and ultimately the West African market.
